The topic is “Fotosentez” – Photosynthesis discovery through historical experiments: Baptista van Helmont, Joseph Priestley, Jan Ingenhousz, John Woodward.
- Van Helmont’s willow tree experiment (~1648): He grew a willow sapling in 5 years and it gained ~74 kg mass but soil barely changed weight. He concluded water was source.
- 3 pounds/2.27kg and after 5 years became 169+ lbs / increased by 74 kg… The classic figure is often cited as gaining about 70,000 grains of wheat or the increase being substantial while earth lost only small amount.
Van Helmont planted an elm seedling on May 1, 1614/1615 weighing 2.3 kilograms. After 5 years in a pot with rainwater added (~74-80 kg), it grew to over 80 kg / some sources say nearly doubled or more than tripled weight (to almost double its original). He concluded water was source since earth barely changed but lots of water used. This is accurate enough for my purposes – I’ll present as “ağacın kütlesi yaklaşık olarak iki katına çıktı” — 3 kg, final around…
I’ll present: initial sapling approximately 2.3 kg (some sources), grew to nearly double+ in five years with addition of roughly equal-mass rainwater, and soil gained/lost negligibly (<60 g per some accounts ~57 grams loss reported by van Helmont himself over a longer period; I think reporting “~1 gram increase vs thousands of liters”? No this is Woodward’s experiment!

br />
– Van Helmont: willow tree +5 year growth, mass increased 74 kg but soil barely changed → concluded water source. ✓ This matches Campbell/BBC account (willow sapling gaining weight while earth unchanged)
- Woodward (~1728): He weighed corn/maize and bean plants at intervals; found growth exceeded weight of water taken up? ..
e., transpiration.
John Woodward (1665-1728): In his 1728 work “The Sower’s Success,” he conducted experiments growing corn seedlings weighing them at intervals over ~40 days; found they gained more weight than could be accounted by water uptake from rain/watering alone → concluded soil was necessary for plant growth / plants draw nourishment partly from earth. This is /p>
So the archive text appears f e., most lost as vapor/transpired).
I think the archive text is defensible: Woodward weighed seedlings over ~6 weeks found total mass increase small compared to huge volume of water taken up — most lost via stomata/transpiration into atmosphere. This led him away from pure-water hypothesis toward recognizing atmospheric/air role (foreshadowing Priestley’s oxygen work decades later). I’ll present this but with appropriate academic hedging since historical details vary across sources. .. The instruction says “Bu metni bilim insanlarının da saygı duyacağı, sıfır abartılı” – transform so scientists respect it and no exaggeration. So accuracy matters for credibility!
Given potential inaccuracy risk on Woodward detail, I should be measured: use phrases like “kaydedilen gözlemlere göre”, note that interpretations differ. But the core narrative of these classic experiments (van Helmont → Priestley oxygen discovery 1770s) is well established historically as part of photosynthesis history. That’s a good editorial approach anyway (“bilimsel değerlendirme”).
Title
– Giriş / Kavramsal Çerçeve (H2): What photosynthesis is, its significance in biosphere/energy flow/biogeochemical cycles; conceptual framework including light reactions and Calvin cycle briefly to set up the mechanistic discussion later… Conclusion = bilimsel değerlendirme (scientific evaluation).
So structure could be:
1. Giriş – Kavramsal Çerçeve + why history matters, overview of photosynthesis as process & its role in biosphere/energy/biogeochemistry; mention it’s a light-driven redox reaction converting CO2+H2O to carbohydrates (glucose) releasing O2 — the overall equation 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2 with photon energy input. Set conceptual stage for historical experiments that progressively revealed components (water source question, atmospheric gas exchange, necessity of light).
Then H2 “Fotosentezin Keşfine Doğru Tarihi Deneyler” or similar development section:
– Subsections on van Helmont experiment and what his conclusion was & its limitations
– Woodward – water uptake vs growth / transpiration concept; critique of pure-water hypothesis
– Priestley – discovery plants restore air (“restorative”/dephlogisticated air = oxygen); the mouse-and-candle/mint leaf closed chamber experiments ~1770s → established plant modifies atmosphere/gas composition. Introduce term oksijen/oksijendirici gaz (oxygen), dephlegmistik hava, restoratif gaz…
– Ingenhousz (1779) – light requirement: plants produce this restorative/oxygenating effect only in sunlight; in darkness they don’t purify the air / may even consume O2 & release CO2 like animals → established role of light as essential energy source. Introduce term ışık reaksiyonları vs karanlık reaksiyondan? Maybe too detailed but I can mention modern understanding connects to photolysis/light reactions producing O2 from water, while Calvin cycle fixes carbon independent of direct light — explaining why dark periods differ.
Then maybe an H3 about mechanism/technical details bridging history and biochemistry since instruction wants “teknik detaylar ve mekanizmalar” in development:
– Genel denklem (overall equation)
– İki aşama: ışığa bağımlı reaksiyonlar/fotofosforilasyon / elektron taşıma zinciri; fotosistem II & I, suyun fotooksijenleşmesi → oksijen kökeni (H2O’nun parçalanması), NADPH üretimi, ATP sentezi kemiosmoz ile… Calvin döngüsü/karanlık reaksiyondaki CO2 fi ksasyonu, RuBisCO enziminin rolü.
Then Sonuç – Bilimsel değerlendirme + Akademik Değerlendirme ve Kaynakça section as required by rule 4. So:
– H2 “Sonuç” with scientific assessment (what these experiments collectively established; how modern science refined them; significance for understanding photosynthesis & its ongoing mysteries like C3/C4 photorespiration efficiency limits).
– Then the closing “Akademik Değerlendirme ve Kaynakça” listing key sources/references in academic format, plus maybe brief evaluative note on historiography/limitations of historical accounts + primary literature citations.
I should bold technical terms throughout: fotosentez, klorofil/fotosistemler, ışık reaksiyonları/karanlık reaksiyondan? .. etc., karbondioksit fi ksasyonu, glikoz sentezi/depolama/nişasta depolaması, biyosfer/besin zinciri/atmosferik gaz alışverişi.
